Garage Door Maintenance For Cold Weather

Cold weather can make your garage door vulnerable to the harsh winter elements. Make sure you keep up with the proper garage door maintenance so you won't be left out in the cold. Although it is recommended to keep your garage door well maintained throughout the year, it is especially important to do so at the onset of cold weather. To help prepare you for the changing seasons, here are a few tips for garage door maintenance in the winter.

  • Check the Weather-strip
Using your garage door everyday comes with the normal wear and tear that is inevitable. However, if you begin to feel a draft near your door, it's time to contact the folks over at Gander Door Company. Weather-stripping at the bottom of the door can often crack revealing an opening that allows for cold air and moisture to sweep in. It's important to fix this immediately because the combination of the cold air and moisture can cause your garage door to freeze at the bottom.

  • Lubricate Moving Parts
When the colder weather hits, all moving metal parts tend to stick and stall-out. To prevent this from happening, it would be wise to lubricate all the moving metal parts just in case. You can DIY with a spray-on lubricator. Just spray all the door's springs, rollers, tracks, bushings and hinges thoroughly. If that doesn't help make your garage door slide smoothly, it's time to call the experts.

  • Examine the Cables
Garage doors use high-tension cables to lift and lower it daily. While these cables are incredibly strong and durable; they can't last forever. At some point, the cables will start to fray and the cold weather will make matters worse by making the cables extra brittle which can lead to further damage. Check for damage around the roller brake as well. As a precaution for your safety, never attempt to repair or replace these cables yourself. Due to the extreme tension they're under, they can snap at any moment causing severe or fatal injuries.

How to Fix a Slow-Opening Garage Door

Garage doors do a lot of heavy lifting on a day-to-day basis, which means that they will eventually need maintenance and repairs to stay working. How will you know when your garage door needs service? One of the telltale signs is that it takes longer to open and close. Let's have a look at some of the reasons a garage door would be slow and how to fix a slow garage door.      Normally, a garage door should take anywhere from 12-15 seconds to open and close. Most garage doors will be able to fully complete opening and closing cycles within that time frame. If you find that your garage door is taking closer to 20 seconds (or longer) to open or close, it may be time to get the door checked.      Garage doors typically slow down due to improper lubrication. Without the proper lubrication, your garage doors parts have to work overtime during the opening and closing cycles, which makes those processes take longer tha...

Insulated or Non-Insulated?

R-Value: “the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power.” This is what you will see when looking at different types of garage doors, so understanding what R-value is will be beneficial. Doors that have a higher R-value have more or better insulation. Knowing what your garage is going to be used for, who is going to be around it, and some other considerations will help you decide whether insulated or non-insulated is best for you! There are times when less is going to be better for you. Here are some examples: You are constantly opening and closing your garage door - the extra money you spent on premium insulation is going out the door. You rarely use the garage for anything other than storage or parking your car - part of the reasoning for insulating is for climate control for people or animals. Your garage isn’t insulated - why insulate a garage door if the garage isn’t insulated? The garage is on a rental unit. B...
